De-escalation Training for Dispatchers [COPS]

Tuition free, in person de-escalation training for active U.S. 9-1-1 call takers, dispatchers, and public safety records technicians. Funded through the U.S. Department of Justice COPS grant program. Pre-registration required. Class size is limited. If enrolling mulitple students please put them on one invoice. The course is POST certified in California CCN#1301-21207 Additional state certifications include Michigan TKT2025-6092 The grant is for local, state, city, county, tribal, 9-1-1 dispatchers.

Description

This course is offered in person and online with live instructors. The course delivers practical de-escalation training for public safety communications and records professionals who manage high stress interactions where clear communication and steady control directly influence outcomes.

Designed for 9-1-1 call takers, dispatchers, and public safety records technicians, the course strengthens techniques that help reduce escalation, maintain professionalism, and support safer resolutions. Participants will practice communication methods that improve rapport, increase cooperation, and sharpen information gathering, while reinforcing standards that protect the public, the agency, and the professional.

Tuition and funding
This training is provided at no cost to eligible participants through a U.S. Department of Justice COPS grant supporting de-escalation training provided by The Kim Turner Foundation. A 501(c) (3) non-profit dedicated to research, training, and wellness of the 9-1-1 community. 

Eligibility requirement
Registration is limited to active 9-1-1 call takers, dispatchers, or public safety records technicians employed by a local, state, city, county, or tribal public safety agency in the United States. Eligibility verification may be required. All federal employees will be waitlisted due to the restrictions in the grant. All students must follow the protocols for pre-requisites.

No-shows and substitutions:

Delivering free training requires significant investment on our part, and every seat in the classroom matters. Unfortunately, last-minute cancellations and no-shows have prevented waitlisted individuals from accessing training they genuinely want to attend. This is not fair to those who are waiting for a spot, nor is it sustainable for our organization.

 

Attendance Policy for All Free Courses

 

No-Show Policy: Registered participants who fail to attend without proper cancellation or substitution will be ineligible for all future free training offered through our organization, regardless of the course topic.

 

Cancellation Deadline: All cancellations must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the course start date. Cancellations received after the 14-day window will be treated as a no-show.

Substitutions Welcome: If you are unable to attend, we encourage you to send a qualified substitute from your agency. All substitutions must be officially submitted no later than 48 hours prior to the course start date. 

Prerequisites

  1. All students must be actively employed as a 9-1-1 dispatcher, call-taker, telecommunicator, supervisor or Records Clerk, Technician, or Supervisor in the US or US territories. 
  2. All students must have their own individual electronic device (laptop, desktop, tablet)
  3. All students must register with their agency email addresses.
  4. All students may not register for more than one presentation nor complete more than one presentation
